QUIET HARBOR

A Little Color, A Little Quiet: Making Time for Yourself

Partially colored seaside café coloring page from Quiet Café Escapes, surrounded by colored pencils and a cup of coffee on a sunlit wooden table.

There is something inviting about a quiet café. The warmth of a fresh cup of coffee, the sunlight coming through the windows, and the feeling that, for just a little while, there is nowhere else you need to be.

Imagine sitting in a comfortable corner of a seaside café, looking out at the ocean. Sailboats drift across the water, flowers bloom along the walkway, and the afternoon stretches out before you.

Now imagine bringing a little of that peaceful feeling into your own home.

You don’t need to travel to a beautiful destination or set aside an entire afternoon to enjoy a moment like this. Sometimes, all it takes is a coloring page, a handful of colored pencils, and a few minutes to yourself.

You Don’t Have to Finish the Picture

One of the things I love about coloring is that there is no deadline.

You can spend ten minutes choosing colors for a few flowers, or you can settle in for an hour and bring an entire scene to life. You might color the ocean one day and return to the café interior the next.

There is no requirement to finish what you start.

In fact, I think there is something especially enjoyable about a partially colored picture. One section is filled with color, while the rest is still waiting for you. It is a reminder that you can enjoy the process without rushing toward the finished product.

The coloring page pictured here captures that idea beautifully. The ocean and coastal scenery have begun to come alive with soft blues and greens, while much of the café remains black and white.

There is still plenty of room for imagination.

Let the Colors Set the Mood

Choosing a color palette is part of the fun.

For a peaceful seaside scene, you might begin with a few colors inspired by nature:

  • Soft blue for the sky and ocean.
  • Sage green for the coastal grasses and plants.
  • Warm sand and natural wood tones for the walkway and café.
  • Muted pink and yellow for the flowers.
  • A touch of golden amber for the afternoon sunlight.

You don’t need dozens of pencils to create something beautiful. A handful of colors that work well together can give a picture a sense of warmth and harmony.

And if you decide that your café should have a bright red door or purple flowers instead? That’s perfectly fine, too.

It’s your picture.

Create Your Own Little Coloring Corner

You don’t need a dedicated craft room or an elaborate collection of supplies to make coloring part of your routine.

Find a comfortable place where you can spread out a coloring book and a few pencils. It might be your kitchen table, a favorite chair beside a window, or a quiet corner of your living room.

Make yourself a cup of coffee or tea. Put on some gentle music if you enjoy it. Set your phone aside for a little while.

Then choose a page that makes you want to spend some time there.

Perhaps it’s a café overlooking the water, a charming street filled with flowers, or a quiet outdoor terrace.

The goal isn’t to create a perfect piece of artwork. It’s simply to enjoy doing something creative.

A Few Minutes Can Be Enough

Sometimes we put off enjoyable activities because we think we need a large block of uninterrupted time.

But coloring doesn’t have to become another item on your to-do list.

You might spend five minutes coloring a flower while your coffee brews. You could work on a few details in the evening instead of scrolling through your phone. Or perhaps you have a quiet Sunday afternoon when you can settle in and enjoy an entire page.

Some days, you may feel inspired to experiment with shading and blending. Other days, you may simply want to fill in a few spaces with your favorite colors.

Both are worthwhile ways to enjoy the experience.

The important thing is giving yourself permission to enjoy a little creativity without expecting anything more from it.

Finding Your Own Quiet Escape

When I created Quiet Café Escapes: Beautiful Cafés & Scenic Places to Color, I wanted to bring together two things I enjoy: beautiful places and the opportunity to slow down.

The book features detailed café settings and scenic destinations that invite you to imagine yourself somewhere peaceful.

You can bring each scene to life however you choose, whether you prefer soft, natural colors or something more vibrant.

And just like the partially colored café pictured here, you don’t have to finish everything in one sitting.

You can return whenever you feel like spending a little time creating.

Sometimes, a quiet escape doesn’t require going anywhere at all.

It simply begins with a blank space, a little color, and a few moments that belong entirely to you.
